In our everyday calculations of our power usage and where electricity can be saved we usually have our own interests at heart, i.e. we want to save money. But today, 5 June, is World Environment Day, and the perfect time to reflect on the broader benefits of saving electricity.

Did you realise that every bit of electricity you save has an impact on our environment? Whether it’s unplugging the television at night, switching off your geyser, or any of the numerous ways to be more efficient, every bit contributes to a cleaner environment.

How it works:

The power plants that produce your electricity burn large amounts of coal. As a result they emit greenhouse gases, which in turn affect the Earth’s temperature. These gases are often collectively referred to as “air pollution”. But a reduction in electricity use (such as you turning off your geyser) means that less coal is burnt, and the less coal burnt the less greenhouse gases are emitted.

The air around us affects us in profound ways. A cleaner environment not only means greener surroundings and more diverse ecosystems, it is also healthier for us.

Who would have thought? The small steps you take to save energy can add up, bit by bit, and can have a profound influence on everything around you!
