Primedia Crime Line

Primedia Crime Line is an award-winning reporting line that has succeeded in mobilising South Africans to blow the whistle on crime. Its involvement as a core partner in Operation Khanyisa provides a major boost and has given the South African public a trusted, independent reporting line for electricity theft.

Before the launch of Operation Khanyisa, there were virtually no reports of electricity theft. However, South Africans have responded to the call to report electricity theft anonymously. At the celebration of Crime Line’s 10th anniversary, it was announced that Crime Line had received more than 1 000 tip-offs in the nine months since Operation Khanyisa’s launch in October 2011. Eskom’s reporting line received close to 600 tip-offs.

By end January 2012, more than 3, 000 tip-offs were received.

The tip-offs received by Crime Line deal with alleged electricity theft in municipalities and areas serviced by Eskom and are routed from Crime Line to Eskom and local government for investigation and action. Where appropriate, the SAPS is also involved in the investigation.
